ABSTRACT

In a crisis such as COVID-19 that struck the world in 2019, social and community activities are restricted, including in-person classes. On the one hand, these restrictions are aimed as a precautionary measure against the virus spread;on the other hand, this could lead to a lost generation without an educational process. Notwithstanding this, online learning through a video-sharing platform is envisaged as the best way to keep learning in this particular situation. However, students have their learning style preferences. While a video-based sharing platform is seen as the most representative way of facilitating self-directed learning, understanding the motivations driving the adoption is crucial. This paper investigates technical, social, and personal environments that motivate generation Z to utilise this tool for self-directed learning, employing Social Cognitive Theory (SCT) as the theoretical lens. A total of 251 survey responses from this cohort were collected and analysed with a structural equation modelling approach. The findings reveal that perceived usefulness and content quality, peer influence, and self-efficacy and outcome from three perspectives, respectively, determine the adoption intention substantially by 67.1%. These findings provide several important implications for video-sharing platform acceptance in terms of both research and practice. ABSTRACT

This study aims to propose a clarification on how female entrepreneurs cognitively process their work-family conflict (WFC) experiences during the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic, with implications related to their attitudes toward their current entrepreneurial activities. It does so by using social cognitive theory as an overarching theoretical perspective. Our hypothesis sheds light on regretful thinking (also known as entrepreneurial regret) as a cognitive mechanism that elucidates how WFC may affect female entrepreneurs' outcomes, such as exit intention and work satisfaction. We further proposed family support as a boundary condition that may help female entrepreneurs to better respond to WFC. We develop and administer a questionnaire survey and analyze data from 346 female entrepreneurs in Japan. The results of our analysis, which is performed using the bootstrapping method to clarify the significance of the moderated mediation mechanism, support our hypotheses. Our results demonstrate that WFC leads to higher exit intention and lower work satisfaction through entrepreneurial regret. Notably, these experiences become stronger when WFC is coupled with low family support. Finally, we discuss the important implications of our findings for researchers and practitioners and highlight opportunities for future research.

ABSTRACT

Background: People who inject drugs (PWID) are vulnerable to SARS-CoV-2 and severe disease but have low rates of COVID-19 testing and vaccination due to multilevel barriers. We partnered with a mobile syringe service program (SSP) in San Diego County, CA, to develop the theory-informed LinkUP intervention to increase COVID-19 testing and vaccination among PWID. Method(s): From March-June 2022, we conducted a pilot randomized controlled trial (RCT;ClinicalTrials.gov #NCT05181657) to assess efficacy of LinkUP vs. a didactic attention-matched control condition in increasing COVID-19 testing uptake and acceptance of vaccination referrals. Based on Social Cognitive Theory, trained, SSP-hired peer counsellors delivered tailored education, motivational interviewing, and problem-solving and planning to the active LinkUP intervention arm. We referred eligible participants (PWID, >=18 years old, San Diego County residents without recent voluntary COVID-19 testing or fully vaccinated status) to mobile SSP sites that had been randomized by week to offer LinkUP or the control condition;all participants were then offered on-site rapid COVID-19 antigen testing and vaccination referrals. Our intent-to-treat analysis used Chi-square tests to compare intervention groups' outcomes and log-binomial regression to estimate preliminary intervention efficacy and explore potential moderation. Result(s): Among 150 participants, median age was 41 years, 33% identified as Latinx and 65% as male, 73% were experiencing homelessness, and 45% had prior mandatory COVID-19 testing. Overall, we only detected one SARS-CoV-2 case. However, more active intervention vs. control participants agreed to COVID-19 testing (77.3% vs. 22.7%;p< .001) and vaccine referrals (32.4% vs. 13.3%;p=0.006). Homelessness moderated intervention effects: LinkUP increased COVID-19 testing uptake more among participants experiencing homelessness (adjusted risk ratio [aRR]: 1.64;95% CI: 1.27-2.12) than those not experiencing homelessness (aRR: 1.25;95% CI: 0.99-1.56). Conclusion(s): Findings from this RCT support the efficacy of LinkUP in increasing COVID-19 testing and acceptance of vaccination referrals among PWID presenting at mobile SSP sites, particularly for those experiencing homelessness. This research underscores the significance of communityacademic partnerships when working with PWID and identifies a promising model that could be adapted to increase access to other underutilized vaccines in this vulnerable population.

PurposeThis study aims to investigate the role of consumption coping in managing collective tragedy stress and stress outcomes using the COVID-19 pandemic context. Design/methodology/approachA mixed-method study with a sample size of 931 was conducted to develop the questionnaire, followed by a quantitative study with 1,215 respondents to test the hypotheses. FindingsThe results of this study empirically validated the use of consumption coping and found it effective in managing collective tragedy stress and its outcomes (subjective well-being and continuance intention). Research limitations/implicationsThis study advances the literature on stress coping in a collective tragedy context, with a specific focus on consumption coping. Practical implicationsThe COVID-19 pandemic has affected all elements of the marketing mix. Understanding pandemic-induced stress and the role of consumption coping can help managers to proactively formulate strategic responses suitable for changing consumer habits. Social implicationsThe COVID-19 pandemic has affected all elements of the marketing mix. ABSTRACT

Massive Open Online Courses, or MOOCs, are a type of educational innovation where enrollment in the courses given is free and available online. The MOOCs course selection is extensive and may accommodate hundreds or thousands of students at once. The current study, however, aims to look into how the academic self-efficacy of real MOOC users affects learning engagement and perseverance in higher education in Saudi Arabia. This study added the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) to social cognitive theory. Therefore, the primary goal is to create a new model by examining the variables that affect the perceived utility and perceived service quality, as well as the students' general perceptions of MOOCs that are really used. Therefore, this research used a quantitative approach and distributed the questionnaire online through a Google Form. It collected data from 276 King Saud University students and used it to test the hypothesized correlations using structural equation modeling (SEM-PLS). The study's findings showed that perceptions of perceived benefits and service quality consistently had a significant influence on social interaction, influence, networks of support, and social identity. A further finding was that reported utility and perceived service quality have always been significantly influenced by academic self-efficacy in actual MOOC use. Because of this, learning engagement and perseverance in Saudi Arabian higher education are significantly impacted by the academic self-efficacy of real MOOC users. According to the findings, MOOC programs generally have a positive influence on the kingdom's higher education system. As a result, it is almost certain that this research model will assist university decision-makers in determining whether or not MOOC usage is prevalent at Saudi educational institutions.

INTRODUCTION: COVID-19 has had a devastating impact on people's lives since its initial outbreak and global spread in 2020. While the U.S. government and public health officials have recommended best practices such as social distancing, wearing a mask, and avoiding large public gatherings, these orders have been met with varying levels of acceptance from the public. Given the disparate compliance, this study builds on Social Cognitive Theory (SCT) to explore individual differences and personal motivation factors in order to better understand what may influence one's likelihood to adhere to COVID-19 protective measures. METHODS: A U.S. national survey (N = 2,049) was conducted April-May 2020, roughly one month after stay-at-home orders were issued in some states. Participants were asked to report their likelihood of taking individual and community protective measures. Multivariate hierarchical linear regressions were run to analyze the extent to which participants' concerns about COVID-19's impact, individual and collective self-efficacy, coping behaviors, and personality traits influenced the dependent variables. RESULTS: Findings showed that COVID-19-related health concerns, collective efficacy, and proactive coping strategies were positively related to participants' likelihood of taking protective measures. Those with greater concerns about their general well-being and the economy, adverse coping strategies like denial and joking, as well as sensation-seeking personalities, were less likely to take protective measures. CONCLUSION: The discussion considers how individual differences fit into broader global efforts to stem COVID-19. Practical implications for public health messaging are that communication may focus on facilitating efficacy in order to boost compliance with protective measures.

ABSTRACT

In April 2020, early in the COVID-19 outbreak, governments restricted public gatherings and ordered social distancing. These demands led to challenging adaptations, which in some cases resulted in mental health issues, including adjustment disorder. Guided by the transactional stress model, the current study aimed to examine the relations between personality traits and adjustment disorder in crisis situations and vagueness and the role of intolerance to uncertainty and self-efficacy in these relations. During Israel's first lockdown, 673 Israeli adults completed self-reported e-version questionnaires regarding Big Five personality traits, adjustment disorder, intolerance to uncertainty, self-efficacy, and background variables. The study was designed to examine the association between personality traits and adjustment disorder and the potential mediation of intolerance to uncertainty and self-efficacy in associations. The findings revealed that intolerance to uncertainty and self-efficacy mediated the association between personality traits and adjustment disorder. The results are consistent with the transactional stress model. They shed light on the role of intolerance to uncertainty and self-efficacy as cognitive mechanisms that promote the development of adjustment disorder. Recommendations for future studies and practice are discussed.

ABSTRACT

The young adult college student population has been the focus of lifestyle research showing a growing decline in this population's mental and physical health. The introduction of the contagious COVID-19 virus and accompanying shelter-in-place (SIP) orders drastically altered this population's lives and lifestyle behaviors. Although health behavior, mental health, stress, and anxiety information was available concerning COVID-19 for the 4-year college student population, there was minimal literature on the unique faction of community college students. Thus, this study was a means to compare the COVID-19 SIP orders with the healthy lifestyle behaviors of community college students before, during, and after the health crisis. The social cognitive theory provided a framework to understand better how personal, environmental, and behavioral factors played a role in the healthy lifestyle behaviors of this population. Purposive sampling was the approach used to obtain a sample of community college students. The participants completed a retrospective survey regarding their lifestyle behavior before, during, and after the COVID-19 SIP orders. Quantitative data analysis included descriptive statistics, crosstabulations, a coefficient of determination, and dependent and independent t tests to evaluate or compare lifestyle behaviors at different times related to COVID-19. Results indicated that the lifestyle behaviors of surveyed participants were not optimal before COVID-19 and further declined during and after the SIP orders. College administrators and local public health officials could use the results to educate and allocate resources related to lifestyle behavior best practices for virus protection and enhanced quality of life. ABSTRACT

E-learning is expected to become a common teaching and learning approach in educational institutions in the near future;thus, the success of e-learning initiatives must be ensured in order to make this a sustainable mode of learning. In order to improve students' learning performance through the use of e-learning in Saudi Arabia's higher education, it was the objective of this paper to examine the relationships between social cognitive theory and learning input factors and the reflective thinking and inquiry learning style as well as the indirect effects of student problem-solving and critical thinking skills. As a result, this study thoroughly assessed the social cognitive theory that is currently in use, along with learning input components and situational factors that should be carefully taken into account while introducing an online education system into Saudi Arabia's top universities as a way of ensuring learning sustainability. As a result, 294 university students completed a questionnaire that served as the initial dataset for the research study, and the proposed conceptual model was comprehensively assessed using SEM. The research results demonstrated that the inquiry style of learning and reflective thinking have always had a significant impact on the social involvement, human engagement, social power, social identity, and social support. Similar findings were obtained regarding the impact of problem-solving and critical thinking skills on the inquiry-based learning approach and reflective thinking. Thus, students' ability to learn in Saudi Arabia's higher education is greatly influenced by their ability to solve problems and think critically. Therefore, it is almost certain that this research study will aid university policy makers in their decision on whether to fully deploy an online learning system as a way of ensuring learning sustainability at educational institutions throughout Saudi Arabia.

ABSTRACT

This study aimed at identifying the antecedents and explaining the unexplored path of mental disorder among the physically inactive individuals. Grounded in social cognitive theory and social exchange theory, this cross sectional field study with convenient sampling examines stress, anxiety, depression, and mental disorder in 377 survey respondents from Jordanian higher education institutions. Additionally, moderating effect of psychological capital and the mediating effect of perceived COVID-19 threat was assessed. Results from Structural Equation Modelling (SEM) indicate that the direct links between stress, anxiety, depression on mental disorder were significant. Further using PLS mediated moderation analysis the moderating effect of psychological capital and mediating effect of perceived COVID-19 threat was proved in Jordanian sample. The study is incremental to suggest future research directions and policy insights for developing countries and specifically these findings are vital for clinical psychologists and practitioners working in Jordanian setting. © 2023,Pakistan Journal of Life and Social Sciences.All Rights Reserved.

ABSTRACT

Leadership and its connection with social sustainability are frequently prescribed for effective management. Integrating self-leadership among the employees is an emerging area to focus on empowering an organization. The principal objective of this study was to empirically investigate the impact of self-leadership on normative commitment and work performance through the mediating role of work engagement. This phenomenon of self-leadership was explained by using the theoretical lens of the social cognitive theory and intrinsic motivation theory. Data was collected from 318 employees who worked in the telecom sector in Pakistan and analyzed using Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) AMOS. The findings revealed that in the presence of self-leadership, employee's work engagement, commitment to the organization, and overall work performance elevated significantly. Furthermore, the results also illustrated the occurrence of two significant mediating paths. First, the mediating role of work engagement in the relationship between self-leadership and normative commitment, and second, the mediation of work engagement in the relationship between self-leadership and work performance. The findings of the study significantly contribute practically, and theoretically to the existing literature.

This quantitative, nonexperimental survey was designed using a five-point Likert scale to measure the differences in the perceived importance scores for enrollment practices into nationally accredited YouTube diabetes prevention programs, or YouTube DPP, among online U.S. adult participants during the COVID-19 pandemic based on the social cognitive framework and was validated with Cronbach's alpha. G* Power analysis for alpha level = 0.05, standard power = 0.08, and the effect size = 0.25 was calculated for a target population of over 100,000. Responses (i.e., N = 258) from the COVID-19 Blood Sugar Wellness Survey were uploaded from SurveyMonkey. The perceived important scores of the participants were categorized into five social distance compliance groups. Descriptive statistics and a one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) were used and the perceived important scores between the social distance compliance groups were observed to be significantly different, F (4, 253) = 7.36, p < .001, eta2 = 0.104. Based on Tukey's post hoc test, there were higher perceived importance scores for compliant, highly compliant, and always compliant groups when compared to low compliance group scores. Also, COVID-19 mandates impacted the participant's interest to enroll into YouTube DPP when presented with face-to-face (36.8%) or online doctor referrals (22.5%), program insurance coverage (30.6%), and programs with smartphone compatibility (27.9%). Percentages below 20% were classified as of low interest. Thus, policy makers should devise program incentives for clinician referrals, insurance coverage, and smartphone applications to increase enrollment rates into nationally accredited YouTube DPP. ABSTRACT

Based on a questionnaire survey (N = 857), this study analyzed generational differences in the public health behaviors of COVID-19 and provided an explanation for generational differences from the perspective of media exposure. There are significant differences in media exposure and health behaviors between the Mesozoic generation (35-55) and the young generation (18-34) during the lull. The Mesozoic generation paid greater attention to information on pandemics. Consequently, their health behaviors surpass that of the young generation. On the basis of social cognitive theory and protection motivation theory, this study develops a mediating model of media exposure on health behaviors, demonstrating that media exposure can influence health behaviors through the mediating effects of perceived severity, self-efficacy, and response efficacy, but not via perceived susceptibility. Moreover, a moderated mediation study found that generation moderates the indirect effect of media exposure on health behaviors via perceived susceptibility. Media exposure influences Mesozoic healthy behaviors positively by decreasing their perceived susceptibility. The implication of this study is that the development of health communication theory must account for generational differences and disease-specific characteristics.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: The workplace has been identified as a key determinant of health status. There is evidence of innumerable health problems among employees, particularly healthcare workers. Against this background, a holistic-systemic approach together with a good theoretical framework is required to reflect on this issue, and to support the design of effective interventions to promote the health and wellbeing of the given population. The present study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of an educational intervention in improving resilience, social capital, psychological wellbeing, and health-promoting lifestyle in healthcare workers, utilizing the Social Cognitive Theory integrated into the PRECEDE-PROCEED model. METHODS: This randomized controlled trial will be performed on a large sample of the employees working in two healthcare centers in the city of Shiraz, Iran. The study will proceed with the healthcare workers of one city being given the educational intervention and the healthcare workers of the other city serving as a control group. Using a census method, all healthcare workers in the two cities will be informed of the trial and its purpose, and then invitations to join the study will be issued. The minimum sample size required has been calculated as 66 individuals in each healthcare centers. Recruitment to the trial will by systematic random sampling of eligible employees who submit an expression of interest in joining the trial, and subsequently give informed consent. Data will be collected through a self-administered survey instrument at three stages: at baseline, and both immediately and three months after the intervention. The experimental group members should participate in at least eight of the ten weekly educational sessions of the intervention and complete the surveys in the three stages. There is no educational intervention for the control group, and they simply experience some routine programs, and complete the surveys at the same three timepoints. DISCUSSION: The findings will provide evidence for the possible effectiveness of a theory-based educational intervention to improve resilience, social capital, psychological wellbeing, and health-promoting lifestyle among healthcare workers. If the educational intervention is found to be effective, then its protocol will be exploited in other organizations to boost resilience. Trial registration IRCT20220509054790N1.

ABSTRACT

The COVID-19 pandemic has been affecting our lifestyles, such as work, living, and health. In Malaysia, the Restriction of Movement Order (RMO) was first announced in March 2020 to curb the spread of the virus. Since then, many Malaysians have been confined to their own home. This new lifestyle can cause a change of eating habits where healthy eating may be a challenge. Hence, our qualitative study explored the challenges and strategies for healthy eating during the first wave of the COVID-19 home confinement period among working adults overweight and obese in Malaysia. Eleven participants were individually interviewed through phone calls. The interviews were audio-recorded, transcribed verbatim, and then coded with NVIVO 12 based on thematic analysis. We found that social pressure, changes in the social setting, more free time to access food, and extra stock of unhealthy foods at home were among the challenges to healthy eating. Some participants countered these perceived challenges by reducing unhealthy food stock, limiting kitchen visits, and utilizing self-monitoring apps to monitor their calorie intake. Social media was not consistently perceived to influence their eating behavior during this period. We conclude that COVID-19 home confinement has created challenges to healthy eating habits among overweight and obese adults with overweight and obesity. Our study provides evidence that vulnerable groups such as overweight and obese individuals require specific nutritional support during pandemic-related confinement to enhance eating self-efficacy.

ABSTRACT

Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to analyse the factors which influence value co-creation intention through customer engagement during the COVID-19 pandemic. This paper studies the online modest fashion small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in Egypt as a Muslim country. Design/methodology/approach: This paper is based on the social cognitive theory (SCT) and the literature to develop a theoretical framework of the factors influencing customers' value co-creation intention on social media. The framework is then tested quantitatively through structural equation modelling based on partial least squares method (SEM-PLS) approach using the SmartPLS software. Findings: The empirical analysis supported the SCT through the following conclusions: first, regarding the subject factors, self-efficacy has a positive significant effect on all dimensions of customer engagement and outcome expectation has a positive significant effect on cognitive customer engagement. Concerning the environmental factors, community experience has a positive significant effect on affective and behavioural customer engagement, whereas content quality has a positive significant effect on affective customer engagement. Second, customer engagement is a significant mediator through the dimensions of affective and behavioural customer engagement. Practical implications: The findings of this study can help online modest fashion SMEs better comprehend the factors which influence the customers' engagement for value co-creation intention whether it is subject factors or environmental factors. Therefore, they can better operate online and encourage customers to contribute to the development of new products and services and hence achieve a competitive advantage and survive in times of COVID-19. Originality/value: Most of the existing studies focused on the value co-creation behaviour and output. However, there is limited research focusing on what contributes to the customers' engagement for value co-creation intention, especially for online modest fashion and Muslim countries. PurposeThis paper assesses the continuance intention (CI) for mobile-based payment (M-payment) services following the COVID-19 pandemic by combining the self-efficacy construct with the electronic service quality model.Design/methodology/approachThis exploratory, cross-sectional research employs qualitative and quantitative research methods;specifically, a questionnaire and interviews. A total of 403 Jordanian participants completed valid questionnaires. Mediation and moderation evaluations assessed the M-payment service quality (MPSQ), self-efficacy and health concerns (HC) to determine CI.FindingsThe results verify the significance of MPSQ and self-efficacy in developing CI and show the mediating influence of self-efficacy between MPSQ and CI. Moreover, HC negatively impact the self-efficacy/CI link.Practical implicationsThis research benefits M-payment service providers seeking to secure customer loyalty via improved M-payment services. The behavioral intention investigation will provide rich information about potential customers' CI and illuminate areas for development.Originality/valueThis research makes an original contribution to the existing M-payment literature by investigating the impact of customers' perception of service quality on their CI to utilize M-payment services, balanced with self-efficacy and HC.

ABSTRACT

Objective: The purpose of the current study was to investigate the effectiveness of a social cognitive theory-based distance educational intervention on anxiety in families of patients with COVID 19. Methods: This interventional study was conducted on families of patients with COVID-19 in Shahrekord, Iran in 2021. Based on the list received from the health center, 100 adult members from families with Covid-19 patients randomly were selected and assigned to the intervention and the control groups (50 per each group). The intervention group received a distance education framed as the structure of social cognitive theory while the control group received some educational material not related to the study by sending pamphlets, educational materials through the What Sapp group. The data used in the study were collected at three stages, including before the intervention, immediately after, and three months after the intervention. Using SPSS software version 25, the data were analyzed Results: Before the intervention, there were no significant differences between the study groups in terms of the mean scores of the constructs of social cognitive theory and anxiety. However, after the intervention and three months after trainings the mean scores of the constructs of social cognitive theory increased significantly in experimental group. The mean scores of anxiety in the experimental group also decreased significantly three months after trainings. Conclusion: Distance training based on the social cognitive theory was effective in decreasing anxiety in families of patients with Covid-19. © 2022, Iranian Institute for Health Sciences Research. ABSTRACT

Objective(s): A significant part of the variance in sexual dysfunction and high-risk sexual behaviors in individuals can be predicted through a dual control model that measures sexual excitation and sexual inhibition. The present study aimed to evaluate the psychometric properties of the sexual excitation and inhibition questionnaire in the Iranian men. Methods: This was a cross sectional study. A sample of 200 married male teachers from Tehran who were selected through the convenience sampling method participated in the study and completed the Sexual Inhibition/Sexual Excitation Scales (SIS/SES) and the Hurlbert Index of Sexual Assertiveness. Forward-backward translation procedure was applied to provide the Iranian version of the SIS/SES. The correlation coefficient, the goodness of fit indices, First and second-order confirmatory factor analysis, and reliability were used for data analysis. Results: The results of confirmatory factor analysis showed the 6-dimensional model of sexual excitation and inhibition questionnaire (Inhibitory Cognitions, important relations, Pair elements, Arousability, Partner’s characteristics, and Relationship location) showing acceptable fit to the data. The root mean square error of approximation was estimated to be 0.064 and the comparative fit index was estimated to be 0.916. Cronbach's alpha of the whole scale was 0.894 and the subscales were 0.832, 0.805, 0.731, 0.780, 0.812, and 0.766, respectively. Also, the intraclass correlation coefficient was higher than 0.8 lending support to the stability of the questionnaire. Convergent and divergent validity was satisfactory. Conclusion: The results showed that the Persian version of the Sexual Inhibition/Sexual Excitation Scales (SIS/SES) is an appropriate instrument for use in Iran, and experts can use this questionnaire in counseling and therapy centers to detect high-risk sexual behaviors and poor sexual performance of men. © 2022, Iranian Institute for Health Sciences Research. ABSTRACT

With the outbreak of COVID-19 in late 2019, people's awareness of actively searching for health information has been growing. Coupled with the promotion of "Internet + medical and health," social media, as an important platform for health information dissemination, has become one of the important information sources for users to obtain health information. However, health information seeking behavior in public health emergencies are quite different from those in daily life. Therefore, the research question of this paper is to explore the influencing factors of health information seeking behavior of social media users in the context of COVID-19. To this end, based on the research framework of social cognition theory, this paper selects six variables to construct a structural equation modeling, including information and platform quality, experience, social support, emotional arousal, self-efficacy, and social media users' health information seeking behavior. The empirical study is carried out by collecting 219 valid questionnaires. The research results show that: (1) Information and platform quality, and use experience have a significant positive effect on emotional arousal; (2) Experience, social support, and emotional arousal have a significant positive effect on self-efficacy; (3) Emotional arousal and self-efficacy have a significant positive effect on social media users' health information seeking behavior. The research provides an important theoretical reference for social media users and operators to cope with the huge demand for health information in the post-COVID-19 era.
